Coming from France: Haute-Savoie, Ain and Annemasse
The Plaine de Plainpalais is minutes from the border. From Annemasse, trams 12 and 17 leave from Moillesulaz, right on the border, and reach Plainpalais with no change. By rail, the Léman Express runs Annemasse to Genève-Eaux-Vives in 8 minutes, every quarter of an hour; from the station, those same trams 12 and 17 drop you at Plainpalais.
What you can take back into France
Few hunters know this: the customs allowance on the way home is not the same for everyone. It is €300 per traveller aged 15 and over by road or rail — but it drops to €75 (€40 under 15) for cross-border workers and for residents of Ain, Haute-Savoie, Jura, Doubs, Territoire de Belfort and Haut-Rhin living within 10 km of the border. Above that, the purchase must be declared. Check the current figures on douane.gouv.fr before heading home with a big find.

A little history: the Plainpalais Flea Market
The Geneva flea market has its roots in the very end of the 19th century: in 1898 the «Syndicate of itinerant merchants of the Canton of Geneva» was born, a sign that the trade was already organising itself at that time. The flea-market traders long set up near Place Saint-Gervais and Rue Coutance, where they remained for nearly half a century.
Over the decades, the market underwent several moves across the city — from the Pointe de l'Île to Place Isaac-Mercier — before finally finding its home port on the Plaine de Plainpalais, where it now spreads out all around the mall.
Having become one of the largest flea markets in Europe, with several hundred traders, it keeps a very living tradition alive: the dawn «unpacking», when seasoned hunters and dealers meet at first light to unearth the rare gem. It is in this spirit that BROCANTE sets up its stand, proud to be part of this long Geneva history.
Who runs the stand
Bart, a Dutchman in Geneva since 1984, part of the Marché aux Puces for more than twenty years, and on the Plaine with his own stand since 2020. It is a distinction that matters when you are hunting: the pieces pass through the hands of someone who knew the market, its dealers and its prices long before he unpacked a stall on it.
